Samaritans Add

 BRIEF:

The Samaritans require an advertisement produced for a new campaign they are running in regards to the well-being and mental health of office workers.

Depression affects many office workers, but usually due to their hectic lifestyles, they are often able to appear happy on the outside, while depressed on the inside.

The client wants to show this visually by creating an image of an office worker (male or female), and have the top half of them dressed in a suit holding a briefcase, and the bottom half dressed as a clown. The office worker is to appear to look sad, by over exaggerating his/her facial expression as a clown might do.

FORMAT - The image is to appear as a single page spread for various newspapers and magazines. The Samaritans logo will run along the bottom of the image, so leave enough deadspace for this.

LOCATION - The client wants to portray this office worker standing on a beach, holding his/her jacket over his/her arm and briefcase in hand. Ideally, there should be some headland in the background of the image, to indicate it is located in the British Isles. The client wants to see a selection of locations, to see that the right one was chosen. Also check with landowner/council to confirm permissions are in place).

CASTING - The client requires a male/female, between 25 and 40, who looks like your average office worker. Straight looks and haircut, he or she has to look believable. (Again, the client wants to see evidence of a selection process, you need to streetcast potential models. The client also requires a model release form).

PROPS/STYLING - A simple shirt, tie and jacket, as well as a briefcase for the top half of the individual. A pair of clowns trousers and shoes for the bottom half.

STYLE/LIGHTING - The client wants the viewer to focus on the individual and have the lighting appear to separate the figure form the background.

CONCLUSION - The client expects to see a fresh, bright style to the images. They also expect to see a selection of angles shot in different formats both landscape and portrait for multi-purpose use in advertising.

Samaritans add
This brief was the most challenging thing I ever experienced. At first it seemed easy to find people who would be willing to pose in a clown outfit, on the beach. They also had to look like office workers aged  between 25 and 40. The date and time of the shoot proved to be the reason why I couldn't manage to find a proper model. The shoot took place on Tuesday 12th February at 12pm. Every person I asked for help said they weren't able to do so because they could not get time off from work. I asked approximately 6 people I know via social media networks for help and received negative answers. A street casting attempt also took place when I went to natwest bank and heart letting agency in broad stairs in order to ask people if they could help us with the shoot. A day before the shoot I somehow managed to find a male model who matched the year group and said he could pose. I explained what the brief required and he agreed to be part of the project. On the day of the shoot he did not turn up and the team waited for about 1 hour on the beach with the equipment set up, all ready to shoot. The weather conditions were not the best either due to extreme wind and sea water threatening to damage the camera and lighting kit. The reason why he did not turn up on time was that he wanted to iron his shirt so that the photos would be perfect. In the end, Ali saved the day and he agreed to be the model as well as the photographer. He shot the landscape and then we went to the studio in order to photograph him wearing the outfit required. If it hadn't been for him, our team wouldn't have had anything to show at the debrief session. My mistake which lead to all this trouble was that I didn't find a person who would be our back up model in case the first one wouldn't turn up. The lesson learned was not to trust anyone and always have a plan B. I tried having a plan B this time but things didn't go as expected at all. I am sorry for the inconveniences I have caused by being unable to find the proper person to be our model.
Team 2 Call Sheet
Title: Samaritans Advert

Crew:
Alistair Dennison – Photography & Lighting
Ashley Charlotte Earl – Styling
Kelsey Plews – Styling
Alexandra Murray – Location Scouting
Andrada Mihalescu – Casting

All members of the crew will meet at 11am on 12th February 2013 at the Old Lookout Gallery in Broadstairs.

Props:
The clown trousers required for the shoot will be provided by Kelsey. The model shall be bringing the simple shirt and jacket. Accessories such as tie and briefcase will be provided by Ashley.

Location:
The client wants the photos to be taken on the beach. Upon location scouting the crew has decided that the best place to organize everything is Broadstairs Beach. The reason for this is the pier which would provide us with shelter in case of weather conditions such as rain or sleet. An email has been sent to the Thanet District Council in order to gain permission for the shoot.

Equipment:
On the day we shall be using a Canon 5d and 4 flash guns which have been booked and borrowed by Ali. He will be driving to the beach on the day and is going to take the lighting kit to the location. Andrada shall be bringing her Nikon D700 as back up and a diffuser.

Casting:
1 model has been casted for this shoot and there is another person who would be able to help us if the first person does not turn up. There was a selection process when it comes to casting and the other models we had in mind were not available on 12th of February at midday.
The model shall be arriving at 12pm on the day and Andrada is going to meet him on the seafront next to the Royal Albion Hotel.

We aim to finish shooting by 2pm. After that the model is free to go.
The crew shall pack up the equipment and the shoot will be finished.
CASTING: These are the people I asked if they could be our model on the day and they said no because they couldn't take time off from work.

For this brief Sof Clements and myself were in charge of casting the models who would be photographed for the task. The people we were looking for had to fit certain age groups and have an appropriate appearance suitable for the brief. We tried to do some street casting at the gym located at west wood cross but that did not go as well as expected. The set location and time of the shoot might not have been suitable for the people we wanted to ask for help. Luckily, sof managed persuade two of her friends to help us with this project. They matched the 18-25 and 35-45 age groups. I asked a model I had worked with before if she could help us and the answer was positive. She matched the 25-35 age group required by the brief and was able to come to the studio on the day of the shoot. Props were provided by Ashley Earl and Clare Rowden. On the day of the shoot all 3 models turned up on time and they did a great job posing. One thing I should have done was removing accessories such as jewelry, ear rings, piercings which distracts the viewer's attention and are not suitable when submitting images for a certain client.

Clare will be bringing 2 more coloured bones, different style, in red and yellow
One of the back-up models will be bringing another pair of trainers, Nike ones.
All other members of the group will aim to bring a pair of trainers in if they have ones which are suitable.

Equipment
Tom has been left in charge of the equipment, and will be collecting this before 9.30am so we have time to set up the whole set. We aim on using David’s own camera, with a 50 mm lens (a 5D has been booked as back-up aswell) the Bowens ring flash (provided by CCCU), backdrops and gel colours over the lights we plan to use. These will be the standard lights available in the studio we have booked – Studio 1.

Models
Andrada and Sof have managed to cast 3 models, and also 2 back-ups!
The main models are 2 males, and 1 female, one from each of the specified age ranges.
We have asked all of the models to arrive at 10am. The studio set up will be fully prepared, so we can the brief each of them as to what is going to happen. This will also allow Ashley as stylist to choose which model will use which prop. It will probably be necessary for each prop to be used with two different models, so the client has choice over which image they want for the final advertisement.

Critical evaluation of professional practice

In the future I intend to become a freelance practitioner due to the liberty offered by this position. That way I would be able to focus on both portraiture and concert photography. My work tends t be divided between these two fields and I do not wish to give up on one of them in favor of the other. Regarding concert photography, being a freelancer is probably the hardest thing to do. Obtaining photo passes simply because you are just that good and people recognizing your work is achieved through years of hard work and experience.

The starting point for that would be to shoot for small online magazines in the  beginning and then hopefully move up to bigger publications which enable me to attend larger concerts held by world wide famous artists. The music genre I aim to focus on is rock because it matches my personality and it is my favorite style. I can relate to it and that's the reason I photograph live performances whenever I get e chance to do so. Copyright tends to get quite tricky when it comes to concert photography because the publication one is shooting for might want exclusivity for the images. These would be used by them alone and perhaps by the photographer on his/her website. Festivals also tend to be cautious with copyright for the images shot during the event disabling photographers to use the images for their promotion and portfolios. At the moment, I collaborate with metal forces magazine in the uk. This has granted me the opportunity to attend some excellent shows in London, Bristol and Norwich. It was an excellent launch ramp. I have also started my own website dedicated to concert photography entitled multichrome-music.com. I hope to be able to gain access to concerts based on that website alone. Instead of shooting for a publication I wish to ask for accreditations as owner of multi chrome music. In June 2013 I will attend HellFest taking place in France where the headliners are bands such as kiss, zz top and def leppard. Including these bands in my portfolio will be a major achievement. My highest aim is to have as many famous rock bands in my portfolio as possible. Hopefully, that will bring me collaboration opportunities with rock bands and related publications. regarding the location, both Romania and the united kingdom are places I want to develop connections with. There are festivals and concerts taking place in these two countries on a regular basis. At the moment I have to get in touch with the organizers of these concerts and try to obtain accreditations.

The hardest part of being self employed and shooting concerts is the fact that until people get to know you, the responses received are likely to be negative. However, I have nothing to lose when trying. Funding is another tricky aspect. The collaboration with metal forces has not brought me any income. Travel expenses and accommodation for the shows attended have been paid by myself. I didn't have to pay for the concert ticket and that is better than nothing. Apart from that, my portfolio has developed considerably thanks to metal forces. In the case of HellFest taking place in France, the situation is similar. I shall pay for transport and accommodation in exchange for the 3 day festival ticket. Yet again, I shall be shooting for metal forces. I intent to continue the collaboration with this website because I appreciate that it was the first one to offer me such opportunities. Not being in a certain place all the time makes things difficult when talking to event organizers. They tend to give photo passes to the people who are likely to be present at all the events they organize.
I have considered applying for funding but that shall happen later on when I have a portfolio which is strong enough to ensure that I obtain the money I apply for. The funding would be used to cover travel expenses and accommodation.

Portraiture has proven to be very rewarding because it has allowed me to photograph amazing people, collaborate with excellent artists and meet talented photographers. The reason why I want to be a freelancer is that it gives me the freedom to travel and create projects in any place of the world. I could be shooting a concert in the evening and then flying to Bucharest the next day for a studio shoot. Until I manage to get commissions paid well enough, I'm likely to support the costs of traveling to the locations and the accommodation. In the case of portraits, copyright shall belong to me and clients wishing to use the images would have to ask for permission  to do so.

The quote which has proved to influence my entire practice so far belongs to Annie Leibovitz. It says something along these lines: "When I say I want to photograph someone, what it really means is that I’d like to know them". I'd gladly engage in portraiture projects whether they are in the studio, on location (indoor/outdoor) as long as I feel that I can establish a connection with the model. There has to be something which creates the feeling of confidence between myself and the person I am photographing. Failure to do so will result in portraits in which the character and personality of the model has not been well captured.

Similar to the case of concert photography, I would like to have collaborations in both Romania and the United Kingdom. In the future, I intend to set up my own studio in order to have access to lighting kits, backdrops and any other studio equipment whenever I desire, as opposed to renting spaces or asking other practitioners if they are able to lend me equipment. It is not fair nor professional to do so. In addition to that, having a space which belongs to me alone means that I can create my working space however I see appropriate. This creative space will most likely be in the UK and when it comes to Romania, I shall seek collaborations with other photographers and renting studios whenever required.

Competition entries

I have decide to enter 2 competitions which are as follows: the Adobe Awards - photography section and the Duggal - Black and White photography contest. Both images are portraits produced as a result of the live brief I have completed in February 2013. I entered the adobe awards because I edit my images using software from this provider. The programs I use are adobe Photoshop cs5 and light room 4. The black and white contest appealed to me because I am interest in monochrome imagery and creating such photos which would stand out is always a challenge.

For my live brief I have collaborated with rockabilly.ro in order to organize 2 photo sessions with 5 models In total. The final images would reflect the pin-up attitude, clothing, make-up and hairstyles. I have not had the chance to experiment with this type of photography and that's the reason why I wanted to complete this live brief and collaborate with the Romanian website.

The shoots took place in a studio in Bucharest Romania, belonging to Alex Csiki. The models involved were Isabel Beatrice Strat, Ioana Vieru, Luiza Clinciu, Mary Revery and Nicoleta Petre. There was a selection process which took place when it comes to models. The people selected identify themselves with the pin-up culture in one way or another. Not every one relates to this attitude, that for sure. I believe that i managed to choose the suitable girls for this project. I did not meet any of the models beforehand so the first encounter was a bit tricky but in the end, it turned out alright. I managed to win their confidence and obtained nice photos.

There were 2 designers involved in this project. They provided us with clothing and accessories. The first one is Diana Costache, owner at dystyle.ro and the second one is Luiza Clinciu, owner at madebyluiza.ro. I also had a make up artist in the team, who was in charge of the first photo session of the series. Her name is Isabel Beatrice Strat. In the second photo session, each model was in charge of her own make-up and hair styling. Liviu Zaharescu was kind enough to help by assisting me on both shoots, helping with light setup and anything else I needed. Many thanks to Madonna, the fluffy feline which was fabulous enough to pose for me in one photograph.

Another key person who made this project possible is Ana Maria Oana, president of the rockabilly.ro organization. Se helped me put all the pieces of the puzzle together. I had to plan everything from the uk so she my main connection to Romania whilst planning everything. I went back to Bucharest during reading week to get the 2 shoots done. It was quite stressful at times, but in the end the results were so rewarding that the entire process was worth it.

Due to the circumstances, we all had to communicate effectively via internet so that everything would fall into place and the shoots would be successful. I am glad to say we did and things went smoothly. I asked the make up artist to get in touch with the designer, Diana so that they would be able to try on the clothes before the shoot. They got along perfectly. the designers, make up artist and models are allowed to use the images in their portfolios in order to promote themselves as long as I am credited for the images. the photos are also going to be published on rockabilly.ro along with a series of interviews with each model. I have also answered a few questions about the project which has been published on the website.

The people involved in this project were as follows:
Models: Isabel Beatrice Strat, Ioana Vieru, Luiza Clinciu, Mary Revery, Nicoleta Petre.
Make up artist: Isabel Betrice Strat
Fashion designers: Diana Costache, Luiza Clinciu
Co-ordinator: Ana Maria Oana

Project Proposal

DEADLINE DATE: 27/11/12

Print Name: Andrada Mihailescu

Description of the Project Proposal (this will be no less than 400 words).
This project aims to promote rockabilly and pin-up culture in Romania. It shall be completed by collaborating with rockabilly.ro which is a website dedicated to promoting this type of lifestyle, culture, perspectives and characteristic features.

The reason for choosing pin-up photography for this live brief is that I have never had the opportunity to experiment working with such characters and subjects. I have always admired their style, clothing, make-up and last but not least attitude.
A strong pin-up portrait should reflect the model’s uniqueness and personality. That is what I am aiming to capture through the series of images.

During 15th February until 22nd February 2013 two photo sessions will take place in Bucharest in order to shoot the images which shall be published on the rockabilly.ro website along with a series of interviews. With regards to the production team, there shall be 5 models involved, 1 make-up artist, 2 fashion designers, 1 assistant and the person in charge of the studio. Due to the fact that I wish to focus on the characteristics such as clothing, make-up, hairstyle and attitude, the photos will be taken in the studio so that the viewer’s attention is not distracted by other elements such as background or location. Final images should reflect the authenticity of a pin-up girl and prove that this kind of appearance can be easily fitted in today’s modern society even if it has its roots in the 1950s.

Hair and make-up are going to be essential for the photo shoots therefore I have to make sure that the people in charge with these aspects are capable of doing a good job and will not drop out 2 hours prior to the shoot. When it comes to clothing and accessories, communication with the models will be the key to success. They will most likely provide the outfits, as their knowledge about pin-ups is far greater than mine. It is here where the two fashion designers also step in. Costache Diana and Luiza Clinciu are kind enough to provide some of the outfits which shall be used in the shoots. The models will also bring their contributions by means of clothing, accessories and shoes.

Apart from that, character will be evidenced by means of personal styling and outfit choices. The location is going to be a studio in Bucharest. Reasons why I have chosen this option instead of an outdoor location is instability of weather conditions and avoiding the distraction of the viewer’s attention by factors such as background when looking at the photos.

The entire project is going to be co-ordinated by myself and Ana Maria Oana, president of the Rockabilly Romania Association. The 5 models who agreed to take part in this collaboration are as follows: Ioana Vieru, Isabel Beatrice Strat, Luiza Clinciu, Mary Revery and Nicoleta Petre.

Identify any RESOURCES / PERMISSIONS you will require (note that your signature at the proforma’s end indicates that you have confirmed access / permissions to what you have proposed – if not yet secured your tutor will be unable to sign off).

I will be using my own camera, which is a Nikon D700 with lenses such as Nikon 50mm, f/1.8 and Tokina 28-70mm, f/2.8. Items such as memory cards, laptop and external hard drive will be required to store and edit the images.

Regarding clothing and accessories, the models are able to provide them. Hair stylists and make-up artists will also play a key role in the shoots. I have been in contact with people who specialise in this field and they have kindly agreed to help me. They will receive the images produces as a result of the photo session so they can use them in their portfolios.

When it comes to location, I will have to get in touch with someone who owns a studio in Bucharest and ask for permission to use the space for approximately 5 hours on two days, in order to get the shoots done. I shall also be using the backdrops and lighting kits available in the space (for example: beauty dish, soft box, continuous lights).

How will you evidence your practice?
I will evidence my practice by developing my personal photographic style whilst experimenting with new types of photography and models with different character and appearances, compared to the ones I have worked with until now.
Portraiture has been of interest to me ever since I started exploring photography and therefore entering a competition by submitting portraits evidences my practice.

Annie Leibovitz’s quote: “When I say I want to photograph someone, what it really means is that I’d like to know them” is my main source of inspiration when dealing with portraiture. I only photograph the people I find interesting and about which I wish to know more. Discovering their personality and character through photography is the best way I can think of.

Does your proposal raise any potential concerns or specific considerations? If so, how might you resolve these?
The only potential concern raised by my proposal is related to timing and people dropping out at the last moment, just before the shoot. I should be able to resolve this by having back-up regarding models, make-up artists and hairstylist. In addition to that, having a set schedule and constantly communicating with the others in the team will help avoid any unexpected situations.
Model release forms will be printed out and signed so that the model gives her permission to be photographed and allows me to use the final images.
